Biography
Joshua found his love for the piano at the age of 7 and was awarded his L.Mus.A and LTCL (distinction) diploma at the age 15 as a student of Yoon Sen Lee. He was awarded the Emily Reinhardt scholarship and studied under the guidance of Professor Oleg Stepanov at the Queensland Conservatorium, before completing his Bachelor's Degree at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) with distinction under Yoon Sen Lee.
Internationally, Joshua has won top prizes in numerous prestigious competitions including the Global International Piano Competition Shenzhen, China, where he was adjudged overall best pianist of the competition, as well as winning a contract to perform with the Wuhan Orchestra, Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition, XIIth International Rotary Children’s Music Competition in Moscow, Russia, Lev Vlassenko International Internet Piano Competition, Russia, American Protégé International Piano and Strings Competition, where he was invited to perform at Carnegie Hall. Joshua also appeared as a guest Showcase Artist for the 2023 edition of the Sydney International Piano Competition. He was also awarded the inaugural City of Joondalup Young Musician of the Year from the Perth Symphony and has been invited as an artist for the City of Joondalup Sunday Serenades Program.
Making his Concerto debut at the age of 12, he performed Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.1 with the Gnessin State Orchestra. His orchestral experience includes performances with the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra performing Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2, Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, Mozart’s Double Piano Concerto K.365, Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2, Queensland Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra performing Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with the WAAPA Symphony, as well as numerous other works with the Perth Symphony Orchestra. Joshua has performed in various venues including Russian State Specialised Academy of Arts Moscow, Verbrugghen Hall, Merkin Hall, Kaufman Music Centre New York and Government House Perth. As a soloist, Joshua has given numerous solo recitals including performances at the Beethoven Sonatas Marathon Recital in Perth Government House Ballroom, Rising Stars Music on the Terrace, Royal School of Music Queen’s 90th celebrations, Little Lev Showcase at Queensland Conservatory, Brisbane and St George’s Cathedral Lunchtime concerts.
Since winning his first National Competition - the 25th National Bernstein Junior Competition at 10, in Melbourne, Joshua has gained a growing reputation as a top pianist, winning top prizes and awards at the Royal School Of Music, Australian National Eisteddfod, West Australian Pianists Competition, West Australian Music Teachers’ Association, Sydney Eisteddfod, Ipswich Eisteddfod, Joondalup Eisteddfod, North of Perth Music Festival, South Suburban Music Eisteddfod, and Fremantle Eisteddfod. Other achievements include the Fred Ellaway Prize, Dawn Baldwin Trophy, Minnie May Bussey Prize, Jill Belbin Award, Geoffrey Lancaster Award, Stephanie Coleman Performativity Award, Royal Commonwealth Society Award, Queenslanders Foundation Prize, Margaret Anne Kerrison Pianoforte Prize, West Australian Music Teachers’ Award and MK Lassell Prize.
Joshua has participated in masterclasses with many internationally renowned musicians such as Behzod Abduraimov, Piers Lane, Natasha Vlassenko (OAM), Jayson Gillham, Michail Markov, Sheila Arnold and Andreas Weber.
Joshua is a seasoned and accomplished music educator, having been a piano teacher for over 10 years. His journey in music education has been marked by numerous achievements, with his students consistently emerging as winners in various competitions, both at the local and national levels. His teaching style is a fusion of expertise, passion, and innovation, tailored to nurture each student's unique talents and aspirations. His mission is to instil in his students a deep appreciation for music's profound joys and beauty. Joshua frequently provides concerts in the community, to fundraise for people in need. He firmly believes music isn’t just a subject to be learned; it’s a transformative force that enriches lives and connects people through a universal language.
